Stardust spacecraft brought us samples of comet dust fifteen years ago on this day.
Nasa's Stardust spacecraft had spent 7 years in space. It visited comet "Wild 2" and collected some dust from its coma. On the fifteenth of January, he returned some samples of interstellar and comet dust.
Scientists analyzed the dust grains and discovered some organic compounds, like hydrocarbons and nitrogen. They also found that the material was older than Sun. The particles collected by the Stardust mission turned out to be leftovers of the ancient building blocks of our solar system.
